Garbage information

If you do not find the information you seek in the following paragraphs, call 311 or visit the Department of Sanitation Web site at www.nyc.gov/sanitation.

Garbage is collected twice weekly on City Island, on Mondays and Thursdays. Do not set out garbage until after 5 p.m. on Sunday and Wednesday.

Except for refrigeration appliances (refrigerators, air conditioners, etc.) containing CFC/Freon gas, you do not need an appointment for collection. Bulky items that are too large for your garbage can be placed beside your regular garbage for collection on any of your regular collection days. Each collection day you can discard up to six pieces of bulk, which includes bags of plaster, broken rock, or dirt (max weight 60 lbs); bundles of wood (no longer than 4 feet, nails removed); or rugs (tied in 5-foot lengths); and any other non-metal items too large for your can.

Metal bulky items should be placed beside your recycling bin on your recycling collection day, which on City Island is Monday.

There are no garbage or recycling collections on City Island on the following holidays:

Thursday January 1, 2009 New Year's Day (Observed)
Monday January 19, 2009 Martin Luther King Day
Thursday February 12, 2009 Lincoln's Birthday
Monday February 16, 2009 President's Day
Monday May 25, 2009 Memorial Day
Monday September 7, 2009 Labor Day
Monday October 12, 2009 Columbus Day
Thursday November 26, 2009 Thanksgiving Day

Set out garbage after 5 p.m. on the holiday so that it can be collected the following day, as the collection time may be earlier than normal. Set out recyclables for collection on Monday of the week following the holiday. During snow emergencies, residents may experience disruption in service.
