June Meeting Notice

Note: Jimmy Vacca and our other elected officials have been asked to come to this month's Civic meeting for a brief celebration of the firehouse victory. Come join us!

The next meeting of the City Island Civic Association will be on Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at 7:30 p.m. at the City Island Community Center, 190 Fordham Street.

Each year the New York City budget includes discretionary funding for the City Council, and this year the Council voted to use at least $17 million to keep all of the firehouses open for the forthcoming year. Libraries will also stay open six days a week. This is good news for City Island, which also learned recently that the MTA is keeping the City Island express bus in place for the next year. Our heartfelt thanks go to Council Speaker Quinn, Council Member James Vacca, and our other elected officials for their unrelenting determination to keep Ladder 53 in operation.

Progress reports with the issues of crime prevention, quality of life, traffic, and development will be presented by the committee chairs.

Bill Stanton will share with you news regarding police issues on City Island, including several arrests made here since our last meeting.

In spite of generally increased police coverage, residents were very concerned about the horrendous traffic congestion and outrageous noise after the Puerto Rico Day Parade on Sunday, June 14. Paul Nani will share the results of his discussions with the Police and Traffic Control.

The owner of the IUC property at 226 Fordham Street is applying for permits to change the zoning from manufacturing to residential in order to build 43 units on the site. Community Board 10 held a hearing on June 2 on City Island and a number of questions and issues were raised; the developer presented revised plans to the Community Board, which approved the application on June 18, 2009. The application next goes to the Borough President. Barbara Dolensek will bring us up-to-date on the latest issues in this matter.
