August Meeting Notice

The next meeting of the City Island Civic Association will be on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. at the City Island Community Center, 190 Fordham Street.

Progress reports on issues of crime prevention, quality of life, traffic, and development will be presented by the committee chairs. Bill Stanton will bring us up-to-date on the progress of various ongoing police matters.

An important new issue has arisen concerning cell towers on City Island. Omnipoint Communications applied to the Buildings Department for a permit to construct a 25-foot cell tower on top of the apartment building at 454 City Island Avenue, near Bowne Street. The Buildings Department turned them down, because the site does not adhere to certain requirements, so Omnipoint is asking the city’s Bureau of Standards and Appeals to override the decision. The BSA is likely to approve this unless the community speaks up, so Community Board 10 is holding a hearing at the Community Center on Thursday, September 3, at 7:30 p.m., and everyone is encouraged to come.

At the meeting on August 25, Helen Anderson, chair of the Nominating Committee, will present a slate for the election of 2010 Officers, including First Vice President, Corresponding Secretary and Treasurer.
