The meeting was brought to order at 7:35 pm by Bill Stanton,
president. The reading of the minutes was waived and they were
accepted as sent. Our website is www.cicivic.org for everyone to keep
up on the news and current events on City Island.
Crime committee report: Bill advised that anyone witnessing a drug
transaction should call him or 311 or 911. John Doyle is helping a
resident whose car was damaged by a hit-and-run driver who stopped in
front of Dunkin Donuts to examine the damage; DD would not give her
the surveillance tape showing the perps, so John Doyle is getting it
for her. Drug activity was reported at the corners of Tier Street and
Horton Street. There were also reports of illegal u turns at very high
speeds occurring at Orchard Beach.
Quality of Life issues are still being pursued. Please report any
homeless people begging at the red light near the northern entrance to
I-95. Refrigerators in the gazebo at the Laurels were supposedly put
there to stop drug activity and minors drinking at that location, but
they are a hazard and eyesore. Calls to 311 have been unresponsive.
The fence also needs to be repaired.
Zoning and Development committee. We have no problem with the correct
use of section 8 but it is a problem when illegal apartments are
chopped up and rented out; calls to 311 should be made if anyone has
evidence of this. The Library Bar at 316 City Island Avenue has
applied for a liquor license; it has been using the existing license
transferred from the previous business at the location. No one saw any
objection but NYS Liquor Authority should be watchful about minors
being served. A rumor is circulating that Ohana restaurant is going to
become a night club; it is for sale. Seafood City is applying for an
expansion.
Miscellaneous items:
The City Island firehouse is storing an unused fire truck, although it
was built to house only two trucks. We should complain because if we
do not, it will just stay there. This has happened before, and we got
it moved. Firehouses are again in danger of being cut with 62
locations on the chopping block. We assume that our ladder company is
at the top of the list to be cut and we should be prepared to protest.
Senator Klein has created a task force to look at city expenditures
and excessive waste. There will also be a zip code notification system
for sexual predator residential locations are reported, and the
community can be notified via e-mail. There will also be a Orchard
Beach concert series this summer. No hard alcohol drinks are permitted
to be served at these events, although a request was made to do so.
The Census Bureau has asked that all households return their
applications by April 1. There will be help centers for questionnaire
assistance at Pilot Cove, the Methodist Church, Community Center and
the library. Everyone should be on the look out for the census
application in the mail with its prepaid return envelope. It is
important to return these forms because budgets, political
representation, etc. are based on census figures.
There will be a City Island reunion in August, and details are being
worked out as to the event. Bob Carmody asked for Civic sponsorship of
a table; we will consider when budget is known. For further
information, go to Facebook for CI Reunion 2010 or call Bob. All money
raised will be going to the Pelham Little League. Volunteers and
donations will be requested/
The meeting was adjourned at 8:43 p.m.
